The Plainsman Museum
Traveling through small towns in the midwest has pointed out some unconscious prejudices with which Michael and I have become acquainted. The Plainsman Museum had a highway sign that announced its location just off I-80. I asked Michael, who was reading, if he was up for a surprise and off we went. What we expected was kitschy exposure to the midwest and a couple of souvenir shot glasses to boot. What we encountered was a comprehensive experience including access to an old school house, a generals’s home during the victorian era, the progression of simple machines through the ages of farming, automobiles, fashion, Aurora’s role in several American wars as well as it’s 10 year involvement in the KKK. My favorite encounter was with Ray, a retired man with an 8th grade education. Ray was forced to drop out of school during WWI to assist his father with work.
Ray: A history buff who believes women and minorities are underrepresented in history books.
